HAPPY HOUR CONFIRMED

The first GT CREW ALUMNI HAPPY HOUR will be at Gordon Biersch in Midtown on May 6th, 2005.

The "appointed time" for getting "happy" will be around 5:30pm.

Feel free to arrive earlier or later... come and go... bring friends, spouses, partners... if you get there first, snag a table (preferably outside if the weather permits - i think they have outside seating...) for about 10 people - we can add on if we get larger!

If you don't know where the restaurant is, here's a map.

We hope to see you all there! If it works out well, let's make it a regular thing!

Alumni Picnic 2005

ATTENTION! BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!
Instead of having our usual alumni picnic this spring in between races, the team has decided to wait until after the Head of the Hooch in the fall. This is primarily due to most of the team heading up to Indianapolis on April 23rd for an extra race. Those of us not going to Indie are going to scrimmage with Emory at Stone Mountain that morning.

So... if this isn't more reason for us to plan our own Alumni party/happy hour/fun-time event soon... then, well I don't know. So, please start commenting.

If we plan it right, perhaps our "new Alumni group" can help plan the picnic and make it more fun and interesting for the alumni. So, keep checking back for updates.

extra update on alumni

from carol:
An addition to the crew gossip and an invitation to crew alumni. Justbefore christmas in my classic tradition of being ever so graceful (not), Islipped on an icy sidewalk and broke my knee-cap into a few pieces. It hasfinally recovered enough so that I can drive again. In celebration of thisglorious freedom, I'm meeting some friends at NY Pizza Exchange in Viningsthis Saturday evening for their famous pizza and maybe a beer (I juststarted driving again, I wouldn't want to push it, wreck, and break yetanother bone). If you'd like to join me, I'm heading that way just before 6(to beat the usual crowd). Oh yeah, and some of us are possibly going tothe movies afterwards. I'd like to come play frisbee, but it will still bea while before I can run and jump and play with the other kids-later,Carol

other updates:
  • some alumni can't escape coaching for gt crew... yet: Me (Cassi), Slim, Stiv, Ree (though this is my last season of coaching for a while)
  • josh vose still stepping it up in the single, even trained through his "spring break" with the team in Panama City... not too hard to convince yourself to go to florida for 5 days!
  • the wedding of Craig Goldstein (coxswain/rower 98-02) to Beth Burnham (coxswain 00-04 <-- is that right?) occuring on May 7th, 2005. woohoo! little people wedding!! heh heh. just kidding guys.
  • Alumni Shelly Holdren & Anne-Marie Richards just put $$ down on a new place near midtown!
  • Bart DeBacker sends out countless ridiculous emails about frisbee...
  • Melissa Deen (now Hallow) got married to Danny Hallow & they have a website.
  • Heidi Schafer is pumping it up in Boston, getting ready to run the next Boston Marathon - keep up with her progress here.
  • Old Man Stiv is finally getting married to Veronica... the wedding is classic Stiv-style, set on some remote island in Greece.

That's all i can think of right now. I'll keep you updated. And if you want to add your current news, EMAIL ME! or just post them as a comment!

The Latest Crew Gossip

So much to say! Some of this stuff might be a repeat but since there's no evidence to what I'd written before this, maybe it's all news to yous!!! If you want further info I may have it – email me at lizhildick@hotmail.com. Likewise, if you'd like anything to be in the next update – which I sincerely hope not to have such a gap in time from the last one - send details along and I'll post it! Happy reading!

Tina Foxx – aka Gidget – is now Tina Whitfield, after marrying Ed Whitfield in 2002. She is working for HDR Engineering in BILLINGS MONTANA – aren't we all jealous! She's a water/wastewater engineer and has started getting serious about cycling (as a lot of ex-rowers do). But lately that's where she collects her hardware.

Nate Hines married Jen Early and they have a gorgeous little girl, Rachel. I had the pleasure of meeting her (no doubt she is Nate's daughter!) on a trip out west earlier this year. We also got to see Mike Smith on the same trip, he is happily married to national teamer Sarah – forgive me I do not know her maiden name!

Papa John is in Philly rowing in the elite program at PennAC – though he's recovering from a stress fracture and has just gotten back on the water. For money, he's doing inventory planning for AmeriSource Bergen's new distribution centers. He just got engaged to his girlfriend Maureen P. Glynn. She's an engineering project manager for the Philadelphia Gas Works, and she sculls at the Philadelphia Girls Club. Penn State grad. Dual-citizenship with Ireland . She's 6' tall so there will be some damn tall little PJs rowing for Rob one day. However, he says kids are still a few years off, so don't get any ideas there.

Jordan Smith joined the elite program at PennAC and he's doing well. He recently broke 6min on the erg, and his sculling is really improving. Papa John says he's a great addition to the PennAC team.

Ok this next segment has to be put in here verbatim, in the words of Papa John (Cliff's most recent roommate): “Cliff [Cantrell] recently moved to Peru where he'll spend the next 4-6mo raising alpacas. Actually, he's not raising alpacas, but rather doing some business studies into exporting alpaca wool to the US . An old friend of mine from California went to school at Stanford with the current president of Peru . So, I hooked Cliff up with my friend and in turn my friend is hooking Cliff up with the Peruvian president for help him in his endeavors. Peru is working hard to establish a better export base for their natural resources - alpaca in particular - in order to help combat illegal economic activities such as cocaine production by their farmers. So, Cliff's work could be very beneficial to the legal Peruvian economy. Hopefully, Cliff will be given access to government resources to aid him in his work.”

Bobby and Jill O'Keefe (and one-year old Nathan) are back from Japan and setting up for the next 3 years on base in Little Rock , Arkansas . Bobby just left for a 4 month operation in ‘the desert'. They are expecting a sibling for Nathan this fall!

Rebecca Woo and Dan Floyd are also pregnant and should deliver in September.

Former Coach Nikolai DeMartini is back in Atlanta . He and wife Pia moved to Oregon where Niko completed his PhD. He accepted a job with the IPST and moved back – soon after the move, Niko and Pia had a son!

Ryan Miller – aka O.D.R. - moved up to Rhode Island in 2001, right after graduation. He works for the Navy as a civilian, like Jonathan Snow, except the place Ryan works does underwater work, like with submarines. He's had a cold winter and can't wait for warmer weather for the sailing and fishing. No wife or kids, but he's got a cat!

Bito bought a condo out in Hawaii and is currently getting into kite surfing while living there. He works in a hospital and teaches at a local college. He also has brushes with swimsuit supermodels like Bridget Hall, but being the gentleman he is, he never goes home with them.

Julia Woodbury bought a house outside D.C. last year.

Jessica and Matt Tebbe have a lot going on. Matt will finish up his MBA at Yale this May, and then he and Jess will be moving from New Haven , CT back to D.C. Jessica just accepted a job with Gibson Guitars. Very cool!

Lauren Tabor is working for Home Depot here in Atlanta . She's my style idol, every time I see her (not nearly enough) she looks amazing.

Kelley Williamson is working for Addison Parish Lighting Sales here in Atlanta . She just moved to the area they're converting from Ghetto to Fabulous – it's great to have her in town!

Yours truly, Liz Hildick, just took a job with Georgia-Pacific as a Senior Analyst in Corporate Finance. (Much thanks to Jim Price for putting me in touch with the group.) I am quickly getting used to the fact that discussions about the SEC no longer refer to Gators football… more like “securities and exchange commission.” I've also just started playing soccer on a league here in Atlanta – good way to feed my competitive side.

Tanya Civjan will finish up her PhD at University of Illinois this year. She plans to stay in the Urbana/Chicago area for at least a year while her fiancé finishes his degree.

Anijka Stone has started her own candy business, selling the toffee she and her mom make – THAT STUFF IS SO GOOD! You can check it out at www.bellstonetoffee.com.

Karlene Berger is working at Dell, Inc in Austin , Texas doing engineering, working for “The Man” but happy to be getting PAID. Purchased mountain bike recently and riding walnut creek trails. She still has the urge to "way 'nough" folks in meetings, and has been called the following terms within the last month by coworkers: pistol, sassy, and fabulous.

Sara Willson will be leaving Atlanta to live in Chattanooga with longtime boyfriend Jarrett Thacker (also a Tech alum). She'll be able to keep her current job as a proposal writer with World Travel and work remotely.

Gil Nowell is married to Rachel and living in Lawrenceville , GA with THREE kids! John is 5, Emme is 3, and Lauren is coming up on a year. Gil's been doing some contracting work for BellSouth while trying to think of an idea that makes money and frees up time. Other than that...nothing but keeping the kids in line, t-ball coaching, and a workout here or there.

And that's the news as of April 7, 2005. If you'd like something about you or someone you know to be posted in the next installment, please email me at lizhildick@hotmail.com. Enjoy your spring! Love.Liz

exclusive interview REVEALED!

About a year ago, Jim Kowalski (1998-2001) was approached by Georgia Tech Crew for an alumni spotlight piece for the newsletter. Unfortunately, the next edition that came out (last week), did not include his revealing interview.

Due to Shelly Holdren's (1992-1997) indepth and relentless search for truth, we are able to print this lost treasure for you here. A true Shelliphied exclusive.

This interview was not edited.

1) When did you join the crew team and why did you decide to join initially?
The first 2 years of my college life were spent at UGA, I know I know. A couple of my high school friends had joined the crew team where they decided to go to school and could not talk enough about it and how intense and amazing it was. So when I transferred to GT I decided to try it for myself in the fall of '98. I remember one of the first practices that I attended was held right outside of SAC on the grass. We did all sorts of exercises: jumpies, man-makers, push ups and on and on. When practice was over I couldn't move or walk for about 15 minutes, seriously. Ethan at the time was the men's novice coach and he came up to me when everyone was pretty much gone and encouraged me to stick with it and talked me up off the ground and to the next practice. To this day, I'm not sure I would have stuck with rowing if it weren't for Ethan's spirit that day. I thank him for that.

2) Fill in the blank: The aspect of GT Crew that has affected the rest of my life is...
Spandex.

3) Fill in the blank: When I rowed _____(a)_____ (the name of a boat you rowed in while at tech), I felt like ____(b)____ because _____(c)____.
a) the mixed 8 at Georgia Games, I think it may have been in the Cab,
b) the frantic and the furious
c) not only was it one of the craziest most uncomfortable rows ever, it was also one of the most exciting, fun and memorable races. Taking home the coveted bronze medal in an epic three boat race, it was a historic moment for GT Crew.

4) Where are you now, and what are you doing?
I live in Savannah and work for Gulfstream - makers of wicked awesome airplanes for the rich and fabulous.

5) Just for fun, what was your least favorite workout while you were on the team?
My favorite practices by far were the water practices. Rowing is a beautiful sport and feeling the boat run underneath you can't be matched. No matter how much I enjoyed the water practices there was no enjoyment when we had freezing cold morning water practices. I would always pray for lighting, fog, abduction, tsunami - anything just to get out of one of those practices. When I was a novice, we flipped as we pushed off the dock. It was 34 degrees that morning. Remember to never get in the boat with your oar behind you, that's big no no. On the plus side, practice was cut short.

6) What do you wish to see for the future of GT Crew?
Just keep on keeping on. I cherished every moment on the team as it was. My wish is that all the rowers can take with them the experiences and memories that I have and continue to enjoy - attending alumni picnics, prom parties at Cassi's, spur of the moment trips to D.C., regattas, pirate birthday parties, weddings, etc. All the amazing friends I have the pleasure of knowing is what I love so much about the team. None of that would be possible if it weren't for Crew.

new ULTIMATE ALUMNI group

In the coming months, Anne-Marie (1999-2004) and I, Cassi (1997-2001) will be creating a new ALUMNI FORCE that will bring us together more often. We are interested in forming a new line of Officers (from alumni) which would include: Regatta Liason, someone to head up Fundraising, Social Promoter (organizing parties, ultimate frisbee games, cook-outs, cruises, etc), Team Liason, Secretary, etc... All ideas are welcome - especially if you wish to be a part of this new group.

Our goal is to strengthen the bond between alumni and present team members as well as to be more supportive of the team through presence at regattas, fundraisers and events! We want to take some of the load of organizing regattas and alumni functions off of the student-officers and make them more exciting and interesting to a larger group of alumni. Be sure to check back soon for more updates and a possible DATE for our first meeting to see who is interested!! For more info, leave a comment.
